 2016 Preview 


       Benjamin Russell completed the 2015 season with a 12-2 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 6A region three, the Wildcats earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. Benjamin Russell made a nice playoff run in 2015, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a very good Spanish Fort team by the score of 31-27.

       The Wildcats won as many games as in any season since 2001.

       The defense was very stingy last season as Benjamin Russell ranked 35th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 14.7 points a game.

       Over the past two seasons the Wildcats have gone 22-4 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Benjamin Russell has gone a combined 51-22. Their 70.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 6A over the past six seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Benjamin Russell has gone a combined 202-98. Their 67.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 6A and 41st in the AHSAA. The Wildcats have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 2010.

       The Wildcats are led by head coach Danny Horn who is entering his eighth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 52-31 over the past seven seasons at Benjamin Russell. Under his direction the Wildcats have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Horn.

       Coach Horn's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-seven season stands at 277-71 (79.6%). His 277 wins rank 2nd among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Horn's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-four times and won fourteen region championships. He has a 61-18 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. Coach Horn won six state championships prior to arriving at Benjamin Russell, the last coming in 2005 at Clay County.

       The Benjamin Russell Wildcats will play in Class 6A region three during the 2016 season.

       The Wildcats enter the 2016 season riding a 7 game regular season winning streak. They have won 11 straight games on their home turf at Sportsplex.

       The Wildcats enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region three and should be a team in the thick of the hunt to represent the South in the Class 6A Super Seven come December.

      Necolby Maxwell returns for his senior season at running back after rushing for 1,841 yards last year.

       The Wildcats open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Central Clay County on Friday, August 26 at Volunteer Stadium. Last year the Central Clay County Volunteers finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in second place in Class 5A region three. The Volunteers lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Vigor by a score of 26-14.

       Benjamin Russell and Central Clay County have met a total of 10 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 5-5-0 record against the Volunteers. They last met in 2015 with Benjamin Russell winning by a score of 38-7.

       Benjamin Russell returns 6A All-State Senior running back Necolby Maxwell. He was named to the second team last season.
